Nath Yoga
Avdhoot Atmananda
Nath Yoga, also known as Natha Yoga or Nath Sampradaya, is a traditional school of yoga that traces its origins back to ancient India. It is deeply rooted in the Nath tradition, which is a mystical and ascetic movement in Indian Sub-Continent, associated with the Nath Siddhas or adepts.
The Nath tradition is believed to have been founded by Matsyendranath and his disciple Gorakshanath. They are considered the primary figures in the Nath lineage and are often depicted as yogic adepts with profound knowledge of spiritual practices.
Nath Yoga is characterized by its emphasis on both physical and spiritual practices aimed at achieving liberation (moksha) and self-realization (atma-jnana). Unlike some other schools of yoga that focus primarily on physical postures (asanas) or breath control (pranayama), Nath Yoga encompasses a comprehensive approach that includes various techniques.
Nath Yoga leads seekers to learn the true Inner Engineering. Seekers soak in the ecstasy. It is the process of the Art of Realization.
Six Major Techniques in Nath Yoga
Asanas
Physical postures are practiced to promote strength, flexibility, and overall health. These postures are often integrated into a sequence or flow to create a dynamic practice.
Pranayama
Breath control techniques are utilized to regulate the breath and cultivate prana, the vital life force. Pranayama practices help to balance the energy channels (nadis) in the body and quiet the mind.
Sadhana
Sadhana which is Meditation is a central component of Nath Yoga, with practitioners encouraged to develop concentration, mindfulness, and inner awareness. Meditation is not Dhyana. Various meditation techniques are employed, including mantra repetition, visualization, and breath awareness.
Kundalini Yoga
Nath Yoga places significant importance on the awakening of Kundalini energy, which is believed to be coiled at the base of the spine. Through specific practices such as pranayama, mantra, and meditation, practitioners seek to awaken and raise this dormant primordial energy to attain spiritual enlightenment.
Tantra
Tantra in the Nath tradition represents a sacred path of inner exploration and spiritual evolution, intertwining esoteric teachings, ritual practices, and the cultivation of divine consciousness to attain profound realization and unity with the cosmic reality.
Guru Shishya
Nath Yoga places great emphasis on the relationship between the Guru (spiritual teacher) and the disciple. The guru serves as a guide and mentor, imparting spiritual knowledge and practices to the disciple on the path to self-realization.
Nath Yoga is not just a physical exercise or mental discipline; it is a holistic system aimed at integrating body, mind, and spirit to achieve spiritual awakening and liberation. The practices of Nath Yoga are passed down through an oral tradition from Guru to disciple, preserving the wisdom of the Nath lineage through generations. Today, Nath Yoga continues to be practiced by those seeking a deeper understanding of yoga's spiritual dimensions and it is a path to Self- Realisation.
